- Tens of thousands of Iranians defied the authorities again yesterday by taking to the streets to honour those killed in unrest over the disputed presidential elections, according to the Guardian. At some locations, Iranian riot police used tear gas and batons to disperse the demonstrators.
- Sixteen Philippine ports nationwide suspended operations on Thursday as truckers and brokers protested the alleged abuse of the government’s anti-smuggling agency.
- A 24-hour general strike call to press public sector claims for a 50 percent pay rise in Niger was widely followed Thursday in the capital Niamey. Administrative offices, banks and many shops were closed.
- Over 500,000 Catholics took to the streets in Vietnam last weekend, to protest over police attempts to stop a parish holding services in the grounds of a church bombed during the Vietnam war and recently confiscated by the government.
- Hundreds of taxi drivers in northeast China’s Mudanjiang City Thursday continued to stage sit-ins before local Party and government office buildings in protest over the local government’s plan to reform the current taxi operating system.
- Chants of “US imperialist, No. 1 terrorist!” and “Death to imperialism!” reverberated through the streets as over a hundred activists marched toward the US embassy in Manila yesterday to protest the meeting between US President Barack Obama and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
- A group of detainees at a Louisiana immigration detention center have begun three-day hunger strikes to protest poor conditions there.
- Hundreds of people have protested against a government’s decision to scrap plans to build an Islamic school in Sydney. Parents and prospective students have said the decision was unfair and racist.
