It is honored as a national holiday — or it was until the son of the dictator used his presidential power to drop it from the list of official holidays.

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. is the current president of the Philippines. Not wanting the smear his family name, he has cut the People Power Revolution from the list of official holidays. But universities and schools across the Philippines are planning to commemorate the day in defiance.

A statement said, “Recognizing our responsibility as educational institutions, we remain committed to preserving the relevance of the EDSA People Power Revolution, particularly for our current and future generations of students. We will continue to keep the spirit of EDSA alive despite active efforts to undermine it. May we invite everyone to join us in remembering that the freedoms we enjoy today were hard-won, and we owe it to the next generation that we protect and safeguard the same.”

In 1986, millions of people poured into the streets of Manila to oust the U.S.-backed dictator Ferdinand Marcos. He had murdered his political rival, attempted to steal the election, and threatened the nation with civil war. The wife of his rival, Corazon Aquino, stood against him in the snap elections and won them by a landslide. For three days, nuns knelt in front of tanks, citizens stood between armies, and people across the country demonstrated for the results of the election to be upheld. The dictator fled the country and this stunning example of nonviolent resistance inspired people worldwide.

Honoring nonviolent history is how we ensure that each generation knows how to wage struggle in their times. In the United States, President Trump has likewise stripped away observances in certain branches of the federal government, including Women’s Month, LGBTQ Pride Month, Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, National American Indian Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month and Women’s Equality Day. He also backpeddled on ending Black History Month and shied away from ending federal holidays on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Juneteenth.

This move comes amidst widespread issues over book bans, censorship, misinformation, lies, climate denialism, anti-DEIA policies, and campaigns against critical race theory. Added together, they are leading to a crisis of ignorance and deception.

In the face of this, teaching nonviolent history has never been so important. And in an unexpected twist of fate, a new creative resource has just been released to help do exactly that.

In solidarity with Filipinos, Campaign Nonviolence invites community members, educators and activists to download, print and use this resource to educate about and uplift this historic movement. If the dictator wants to erase it, the global community of nonviolent activists can make it more widely known than ever.

Coloring page designer and community artist Leah Cook said, “It is encouraging and inspiring to see the strength of the people-power response — 39 years later, they’re not just meekly complying with the erasure of their history, they’re once again taking collective action. There’s another teaching in there about this kind of work coming in waves, and how important legacy and teaching lineage is in this kind of tradition, too.”

As with the other eight coloring pages in the Nonviolent History Coloring Pages Project, the People Power Revolution page comes with a user-friendly study guide that can be downloaded by community groups, schools and activists. The guide includes a short overview of the movement, a set of notes on historical details in the images, and discussion questions that help connect the past to the present.

The Nonviolent History Coloring Pages project is a tool for teaching history and making these stories accessible to a wide range of groups.

“We designed these pages as resources for educators who wanted to talk about hot-button topics, but needed a way to bring them up in subtle, oblique or backdoor ways,” said one staff member at Pace e Bene, the nonprofit that coordinates the project.

The page on the Birmingham Children’s March discusses racial justice, of course, but it also lifts up the long tradition of high school student walkouts that stretches from the civil rights movement to the climate strikes and campaigns to end school shootings. The Women of Liberia Mass Action For Peace is about stopping a civil war, but it also shows how a group of women ousted a brutal dictator. The story of the Danish rescue of the Jews explores the dramatic life-saving actions under Nazi occupation, but also invites challenging questions to be raised around refugees and asylum seekers, genocide and cycles of violence.

The list of pages grows each year and currently includes:

1. Birmingham Children’s March, 1963
2. The March of the Mill Children, 1903
3. Delano Grape Strike & Boycott, 1965-70
4. Capitol Crawl for the ADA, 1990
5. Egyptian Builders Strike, 1170 BCE
6. India’s Forest Protectors, Rajasthan, 1730 and Uttarakhand, 1970
7. Women of Liberia Mass Action For Peace, 2003
8. Rescue of Danish Jews, Denmark, 1943
9. People Power Revolution, Philippines, 1986

The People Power Revolution in the Philippines was selected for the project because of its themes of pro-democracy movements, mass action, violence de-escalation, interpositioning to halt two armies from starting a civil war, disciplined nonviolent approach, faith in action, and cultural traditions used for peacebuilding. Campaign Nonviolence recognizes it as a key struggle for everyone to know about and learn from.

At this time in history, stories like the People Power Revolution are vitally important for citizens around the world who are struggling for democracy. The movement is a powerful example of how people can wield power in dramatic and effective ways.

Go further:

Teaching People Power?
