Palestinians protested on Monday across Israel and the Occupied Territories against an Israeli government plan that would displace
tens of thousands of Bedouins
. The Negev region in southern Israel is home to 200,000 Bedouin citizens, half of whom live in villages the Israeli government does not recognise. Some villages have been demolished
The Adalah Legal Center, a rights group in Israel, said
the Prawer-Begin plan would destroy 35 such villages and force the displacement of up to 70,000 residents.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called
the plan a “historic decision” meant to “put an end to the spread of illegal building by Negev Bedouin and lead to the better integration of the Bedouin into Israeli society”.
