PHILADELPHIA — At a press conference this morning at the Bellevue hotel, a group of parents and Philadelphia School District employees began an indefinite fast in protest of deteriorating safety conditions in Philly’s public schools, including last week’s announcement that 3,783 school district workers would be laid off at the end of the school year.
This round of layoffs includes over 1,200 school safety staff, as well as hundreds of teachers and assistants. Following the press conference, the fasters will encamp outside Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett’s Philadelphia office. They have pledged to refuse all food and juice until the city and state make safety in Philadelphia schools a priority. They say the situation has become so serious that they are now willing to risk their own health to get students the resources and support they need.
