On March 30, 1924, first day of the Vykom satyagraha, three mixed-caste volunteers — two of them so-called untouchables, whose lack of status in the Hindu caste system is disclosed by their below-waist garb — approached the bamboo pole barriers erected by police of the Travancore princely state, where their passage was halted onto the forbidden temple roads.
