Populist ultranationalist movements, rife with xenophobia, nativism and fascism are on the rise around the world — and increasingly these political agendas intersect with so-called religious ideologies. The Summer 2023 issue of Fellowship magazine looks deeply at current problematic interconnections between religion and nationalism in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Through feature stories and analysis, poetry, book reviews, and opinion pieces by writers around the globe, we look at the stories behind the cooptation and distortion of religious language and imagery, and how those ideologies are feeding today’s burgeoning anti-democratic, extremist political movements.
