That includes civil rights icon Bayard Rustin. That\u2019s the \nmessage columnist Coleman Hughes and video producer Taige Jensen tried \nto send in a multimedia <em>New York Times<\/em> opinion piece titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/28\/opinion\/bayard-rustin-race-identity.html\">\u201cThe Gay, Black Civil Rights Hero Opposed to Affirmative Action.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confronting the headline\u2019s truth made clicking play difficult for me \u2014 until I  realized the headline and Hughes\u2019 claim could be debunked. When I failed  to recall who\u2019d published the video, Google came to the rescue. The  search engine yielded links both to the video and a relevant October  1987 <em>New York Times<\/em> Letter to the Editor. Signed by Norman Hill and Leon Lynch, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1987\/10\/03\/opinion\/l-rustin-fought-quotas-not-affirmative-action-769887.html\">letter<\/a> refuted the claim Rustin was against affirmative action. Hill and Lynch served as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apri.org\/]\">A. Phillip Randolph Institute<\/a>\u2019s president and co-chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> \u201cRustin believed in affirmative action with objective and realistic criteria and an outreach component that would serve and sustain those who were denied equal opportunity because of past discrimination. He was, however, firmly opposed to quotas, believing that they were undemocratic and fostered the idea that blacks and other minorities were somehow incapable of competing in society, a notion he fought a lifetime to dispel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hill and Lynch noted Rustin \nserved as Recruitment and Training Program\u2019s board chairman. The \nprogram\u2019s mission was to \u201crectify underrepresentation of blacks and \nother minority groups in the construction and building trades.\u201d Around \n18,000 minorities became apprentices before the Reagan administration \naxed the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correcting Hughes\u2019 inaccuracy doesn\u2019t spring \nfrom any desire to protect Rustin from critique. He\u2019s not above \ncritique. With that said, Hill and Lynch\u2019s characterization of Rustin\u2019s \nview on affirmative action resonates with me. Like the 14th Amendment \nand Voting Rights Act, affirmative action was another effort to \n\u201cgrandfather\u201d people of color into the American Dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of \nthose actions reconstructed the American political and social systems. \nSpeaking of Reconstruction, the Compromise of 1877 allowed Rutherford B.\n Hayes to get the electoral votes to be awarded the White House in \nexchange for ending progress that Reconstruction was bringing. \nAffirmative action, in its present form, doesn\u2019t transform systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acknowledging  a 6-minute video doesn\u2019t allow for much explanation, Hughes\u2019 dependence on blanket statements irks me. Declaring Rustin opposed reparations  without much context is disingenuous. Reparations originated in James Forman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/episcopalarchives.org\/church-awakens\/exhibits\/show\/specialgc\/black-manifesto\">\u201cBlack Manifesto,\u201d<\/a>  which called for churches and faith communities to give $500 million to  the Black community. Forman debuted the manifesto in May 1969 at Riverside Church in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking deeper, it seems Rustin believed changing political systems and choices would be the better  options. Therefore, as Hughes noted, Rustin advocated for a federal jobs  guarantee, higher minimum wage, and universal health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.forusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/BRLI-logo-graphic-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7459\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Systems kept \u2014 and continue to keep \u2014 Black people from accessing employment, earning a living wage, and getting adequate health care. Some White liberals have fashioned themselves into patron saints thanks to some  successful attempts to rectify these issues. So Rustin\u2019s discussion of  White liberal syndrome gets no push-back from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNegroes have  been used and exploited in many ways by White Americans, but it is only  recently that they have been asked to satisfy the masochistic craving of disenchanted liberals for flagellation and rejection,\u201d Rustin said in  an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nixonlibrary.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/virtuallibrary\/documents\/jul10\/70.pdf\">August 1969 letter<\/a> to Project Upward Bound Director Thomas Billings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No\n White liberal can argue supporting civil rights didn\u2019t get them Black \nvotes. They can\u2019t argue that safety net programs didn\u2019t get them Black \nvotes. White liberal politicians got and \u2014 continue to get \u2014 Black \nvotes, thanks to their support of those policies, out of survival, not \nlaziness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocating for systemic change could mean those votes \nwould no longer be guaranteed. Systemic change could also make calling \nBlack youth \u201csuperpredators\u201d a less effective way to stump for criminal \njustice legislation. The latter is a memory to some, but surprisingly \nfresh for young Black voters. In addition to Russian interference and \nsexism, lingering distrust played a factor in the 2016 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With\n that said, let me be clear, I\u2019m no friend of conservatives. In his \nvideo op-ed, Hughes follows up the \u201cWhite liberal syndrome\u201d segment with\n research that argues conservatives are less condescending than \nliberals. I find that an interesting ploy. While liberals may talk down \nto me, conservatives who support the Trump administration are more \nproblematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately and perhaps ironically, Hughes seems to \npaint Rustin as the Black Bernie Sanders by utilizing cherry-picked \nquotes.
