{"id":50722,"date":"2019-07-12T15:22:34","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T15:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/?p=50722"},"modified":"2019-07-12T15:23:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T15:23:57","slug":"humanitarian-relief-seawatch-no-more-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/2019\/07\/humanitarian-relief-seawatch-no-more-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanitarian relief is never a crime"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, two migration justice heroes each faced 10-year prison sentences for the &#8220;crime&#8221; of saving lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carola Rackete, the captain of <a href=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/2019\/05\/europe-migrant-rescue-ship-sea-watch\/\">Sea-Watch 3<\/a>, a German-operated search and rescue ship, was arrested by Italian authorities after landing the boat without permission on the island of Lampedusa. This was after a 17-day ordeal during which no European country offered the boat \u2014 with its 42 primarily Black and Muslim refugees \u2014 safe harbor. Carola was freed on Saturday, however the Italian Government impounded the ship and banned it from Italian waters. Today, 80 migrants drowned in an inflatable vessel that capsized off of the coast of Tunisia &#8212; people the Sea-Watch 3 and its valiant volunteer crew possibly could have saved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sea-Watch enters Lampedusa, captain Carola Rackete arrested\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mS9Dkl27MzI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scott Warren, humanitarian activist and volunteer with <a href=\"http:\/\/forms.nomoredeaths.org\">No More Deaths<\/a> in Tucson, Arizona, was criminalized again last week for saving migrant lives. In June, a hung jury refused to convict him for providing water, food, clean clothes and beds to two undocumented migrants who had crossed the Sonoran Desert from Mexico. However, last week prosecutors called Scott back to court on new trumped up charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Scott Warren of No More Deaths Faces Retrial for Providing Humanitarian Aid to Migrants in Arizona\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qyaiKcRlp90?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carola and Scott&#8217;s criminalization are emblematic of the growth and resurgence of a White Supremacist movement in many Western countries \u2014 one which seeks to persecute and punish humanitarian aid workers rather than welcome the tired, hungry, poor and oppressed.
