{"id":51719,"date":"2021-03-30T17:28:29","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T17:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/?p=51719"},"modified":"2021-04-06T14:06:25","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T14:06:25","slug":"breaking-the-silence-nationwide-webinar-martin-luther-king","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/2021\/03\/breaking-the-silence-nationwide-webinar-martin-luther-king\/","title":{"rendered":"Nationwide webinar &#8216;Breaking the Silence&#8217; celebrates Martin Luther King&#8217;s prophetic Riverside speech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>FOR-USA extends the following invitation, endorsed by over 50 religious leaders.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed \u2026 without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government.\u201d Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s words \u2014 delivered at New York City\u2019s Riverside Church on April 4, 1967 exactly one year prior to his assassination in 1968 \u2014  resonate even more deeply now than when he first spoke them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. King\u2019s address was controversial at the time because it marked his articulation of the relationship between the struggle for civil rights domestically and the global struggle against what he referred to as \u201cgiant triplets of racism, extreme materialism and militarism.\u201d At the time, his speech, known as \u201cBeyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence,\u201d drew intense criticism from institutions ranging from the <em>New York Times<\/em> to the <em>Washington Post<\/em> to the NAACP. Many felt he had moved outside of his narrow lane.&nbsp; As America exports that toxic cocktail abroad and continues to wage war against the poor, Dr. King\u2019s words still ring as prophetic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kingandbreakingsilence.org\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-51721 img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/NEWEST-3-25-PEACE_poster_joinus-1229x2048-1-615x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/NEWEST-3-25-PEACE_poster_joinus-1229x2048-1-615x1024.png 615w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/NEWEST-3-25-PEACE_poster_joinus-1229x2048-1-180x300.png 180w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/NEWEST-3-25-PEACE_poster_joinus-1229x2048-1-768x1280.png 768w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/NEWEST-3-25-PEACE_poster_joinus-1229x2048-1-922x1536.png 922w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/NEWEST-3-25-PEACE_poster_joinus-1229x2048-1.png 1229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As representatives (see list below) of both the Jewish and Christian faith traditions, it is also significant that the anniversaries of Dr. King\u2019s Riverside Church speech and his assassination this year happen to fall on both the final day of Passover and Easter Sunday. On the same day that Jews recall their Exodus from slavery and Christians celebrate Jesus\u2019 resurrection, we are reminded that Dr. King used the language of faiths to condemn violence and injustice perpetrated in our name by the government of the United States. \u201cSurely this madness must cease. We must stop now,\u201d he said. \u201cI speak as a child of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam. I speak for those whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor in America who are paying the double price of smashed hopes at home, and dealt death and corruption in Vietnam.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King\u2019s target in 1967 was the escalating American war in Vietnam while decreasing the war on poverty, but in 2021 we could just as easily substitute Black Lives, Native Americans or the poor and his charge would ring true as ever in the United States. Clearly it is our own humanity that is at stake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society,\u201d he preached. \u201cWhen machines and computers, profit motives and property rights, are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That night in 1967, Dr. King offered us a vision of how we might come closer to a culture of peace with justice.&nbsp; Over a half century later, that vision has an urgency in terms of racial, social, economic and climate justice for our daily lives and our future that he couldn\u2019t possibly have imagined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We invite you and the communities you lead or are part of to join us on April 4, 2021 at 7 p.m. EDT for our national webinar where a diverse group of leaders, luminaries and thinkers from all walks of life will recreate his prophetic speech and discuss its relevance for organizing today.
