{"id":53599,"date":"2024-03-25T17:57:04","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T17:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/?p=53599"},"modified":"2024-03-25T17:57:05","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T17:57:05","slug":"americas-deal-with-the-devil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/2024\/03\/americas-deal-with-the-devil\/","title":{"rendered":"America&#8217;s deal with the devil"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I write this, in the last two weeks two 18-year-old males, one white and one Hispanic, have killed 31 people in two \u201cmass shootings.\u201d We feel exhausted and horrified; we feel like everything in America is broken. And we are awash in media coverage, articles, newsprint, talking heads, and panel discussions about gun violence in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I, like so many of us, feel confused and overwhelmed by the horror of it all. And yet there are aspects of America\u2019s gun and violence problem that go largely unaddressed despite their disturbing nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-one\"><strong>One<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/2024\/03\/guns-winter-2024\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53780 img-fluid alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad.png 1700w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad-204x300.png 204w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad-696x1024.png 696w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad-768x1129.png 768w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad-1044x1536.png 1044w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/03\/Guns-ToC-ad-1393x2048.png 1393w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Black communities across America, residents witness or experience daily mass shootings and killings of young Black males by other young Black males. Black males have the highest firearm-related death rates in the country. Mostly Black men are picked off in eruptions of violence, sometimes singly, often by the dozen. This is a problem \u2014 yes, of gun control, but it is also a raging mental health issue that so many more men in the Black community than in other communities settle scores, express anger and respond to pain by choosing to commit homicide. That is the mass murder crisis that remains stable in terms of the number of victims, year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generational trauma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Systemic racism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor schools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Untreated personal trauma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fragile families<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poverty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Violence-plagued neighborhoods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor diets which impact health social and intellectual development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neglected and defunded communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of mental health treatment These are among the most obvious answers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young men don\u2019t just \u201csnap\u201d; they kill because of long-simmering rage, mental health issues that have gone ignored or untreated, the inability to delay gratification, and lack of skills to defuse potential violence. Black men are not born killers. Why do they disproportionately murder?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-two\"><strong>Two<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there is the issue of how and why so many white Americans love and need to stockpile guns. As is everything in America, this too is rooted in race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dr. Jonathan Metzl, a psychiatrist and sociologist at Vanderbilt University, white supremacy is the key to understanding America\u2019s gun debate. In his book, &#8220;Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America\u2019s Heartland,&#8221; Metzl argues that the intensity and polarization of the U.S. gun debate makes much more sense when understood in the context of whiteness and white privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forusa.org\/product\/fellowship-magazine-subscription-one-year\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53420 img-fluid aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/fellowship-ad.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/fellowship-ad.png 1200w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/fellowship-ad-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/fellowship-ad-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/wagingnonviolence.org\/forusa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/09\/fellowship-ad-768x403.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with <em>The Guardian<\/em>, Metzl said, \u201cCarrying a gun in public has been coded as a white privilege. Advertisers have literally used words like \u2018restoring your manly privilege\u2019 as a way of selling assault weapons to white men. In colonial America, landowners could carry guns, and they bestowed that right on poor whites in order to quell uprisings from \u2018Negroes\u2019 and Indians. John Brown\u2019s raid was about weapons. Scholars have written about how the Ku Klux Klan was aimed at disarming African Americans. When African Americans started to carry guns in public \u2014 think about Malcolm X during the civil rights era \u2014 all of a sudden, the Second Amendment didn\u2019t apply in many white Americans\u2019 minds. When Huey Newton and the Black Panthers tried to arm themselves, everyone suddenly said, \u2018We need gun control.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen states like Missouri changed their laws to allow open carry of firearms, there were parades of white Americans who would carry big long guns through congested areas of downtown St. Louis, who would go into places like Walmart and burrito restaurants carrying their guns, and they were coded as patriots. At the same time, there were all the stories about African American gun owners who would go to Walmart and get tackled and shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho gets to carry a gun in public? \u201cWho is coded as a patriot?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho is coded as a threat, a terrorist, or a gangster?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat does it mean to carry a gun or own a gun or buy a gun \u2013 those questions are not neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have 200 years of history, or more, defining that in very racial terms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it seems that disempowered Black men use guns for momentary control and authority. White men privileged by their race use guns to hold onto their sense of racial control and authority. And somewhere in America every day it is estimated that four Black women are murdered by a husband, boyfriend, or domestic partner, often with a gun. All this is because these people \u2014 Black, white, male and female \u2014 are living in America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The intensity and polarization of the U.S. gun
