Reporting in the immediate aftermath of the coup of Sept. 11, 1973, it represented one of the earliest reports of foreign intervention to topple Chilean democracy and the government of socialist Salvador Allende. As a result, readers of Fellowship were among the earliest North American audiences to understand the role of the United States government in the Chilean military’s terror campaign of repression, arbitrary detention, torture, killing, and disappearance of its people.

In the succeeding half-century, the narrative reported by MacEoin has been supplemented by reporting from many sources including investigative work of activists, scholars, archivists, and the Truth and Reconciliation process in Chile following the restoration of democracy in 1991. A recent book, “I Surrender,” by Kathleen Osberger, takes its place among this important literature.

Osberger narrates her experience as a young person motivated by Christian social conscience to respond to the needs of the world, particularly among people who were impoverished or marginalized. Her story of a young person from a comfortable and sheltered background who confronts the suffering of the world is a familiar one, but the beauty of each story resides in the particularities and details.

In Osberger’s case, her faith led her to work as a volunteer in Panama and eventually to Chile, arriving scarcely two years after the coup d’etat. There she was welcomed by members of the Sisters of Notre Dame and other women religious who were working with poor communities and victims of the military regime. Soon it became apparent to Osberger that some of this work involved providing support for the perceived enemies of Pinochet’s dictatorship: Her residence with the women religious was a safe house for political dissidents.

A story of terror and intrigue could have been written as a political thriller, but Osberger shows profound respect for her friends and the risks they took. When the Chilean police and officials from military intelligence raid her home, the fear is palpable, but she treats the characters of her story with care, reflecting the complexity and nuances of the situation.

She tells the dramatic and terrifying account of her own detention and interrogation with the force it deserves, but without sensationalism. The book’s title comes from a moment when she was being transported in a police vehicle blindfolded and uncertain of her fate. She turned to God in prayer, placing herself in God’s care with the words, “I surrender.” Like so many others in similar circumstances of distress, she was blessed by an experience of God’s presence.

For people familiar with Chile’s history, Osberger’s book provides an opportunity to revisit familiar themes — Allende’s efforts to ameliorate the suffering of the poor by creating a democratic and nonviolent road to socialism; the ferocious violence of the Chilean military as it sought to eliminate a communist threat; the role of the church as a protector of the vulnerable through organizations like the Comité Pro Paz that eventually became the Vicaría de la Solidaridad, an arm of the Roman Catholic Church that defended human rights for people of all ideologies.

She also focuses the reader’s attention on notorious figures like Michael Townley, an operative of the Chilean military police who was responsible for the 1976 car bombing in DuPont Circle in Washington, DC that killed Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffat. Townley led the raid that led to Osberger’s arrest and participated in her interrogation.

Osberger’s book, based on her life in Chile in 1975 and follow-up interviews she conducted in the mid-2000s, is a testament to the ways that dramatic political events shape individuals’ lives. It bears witness to the important place that Chile’s story holds for people of faith concerned about human rights, justice, and peace. It also serves as a reminder that despite 50 years of investigation and reporting, important questions about the role of the United States in these events remain unanswered.

Kathleen Osberger’s new book based on her life in Chile in 1975 is a testament to the ways that dramatic political events shape
