There are parts of the Bhagavad Gita that I take literally. Among them, two verses from chapter four stand out at any time \u2014 particularly one like this: \u201cWhenever dharma declines, and unrighteousness swells forth, I incarnate myself from age to age.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there was ever a time that fits this description, when human degradation menacingly raises its ugly head, it\u2019s this one. Where, then, is our incarnation? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can imagine the Supreme Being answering, \u201cWhat did you do with the last one?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps s\/he is yet to come. Or perhaps \u2014 and this is the safest interpretation \u2014 we are (to be) that incarnation, that saving power.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our response, in addition to everything else we\u2019re doing, is to lift up the five points for personal empowerment embedded in what we, at the Metta Center for Nonviolence, call Roadmap<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n

    These points deserve some elaboration. So, we have decided to follow up on our recent article<\/a> \u2014 which introduces Roadmap in general \u2014 with five pieces over the next five weeks dedicated to each of the five points in turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How pertinent, when so many of us are \n\u201csheltering in place,\u201d our kids out of school, desperate for wholesome \nentertainment on the one hand and of course glued to the news!  A hard \ntime to tell people to back away from the media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Yet, when you develop some sensitivity to what\n a human being really is and some skill in reading the \u201csubtext\u201d in an \nadvertisement or a piece of \u201centertainment,\u201d you begin to realize that \nthere\u2019s very little left in the commercial world of media that does not \nin fact trivialize, misrepresent and degrade us.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It does not have to be an action movie or an ad message like \u201cOur pain is your gain\u201d to try to tell us we\u2019re small-minded, competitive fragments caught in a nexus of violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, one objection this suggestion meets with is, “There\u2019ll be nothing left to watch.” Point number two in the inner circle, and all of them in their own way answer this objection. <\/p>\n\n\n

    The next one is, “How will I know what\u2019s going on in the world if even the news is slanted toward violence and firmly embedded in the old story (which it is)?” Fortunately, there are more and more resources now to fill that gap; the field is expanding so rapidly that even the appendix to my new book, “The Third Harmony,” will soon be out of date!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Don\u2019t let anyone tell you that they \u201clike\u201d violence, and it doesn\u2019t do any harm.  There are many studies showing that watching violence makes us more violent in attitude and eventually behavior. There’s also a growing awareness that \u2014 while we may have been so far conditioned that we get a rush of some kind seeing it \u2014 violence alienates us and sickens the mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s a part of what the military calls \u201cmoral injury\u201d (which it tries to ignore).  While breaking an entrenched media habit is unquestionably going to be a struggle for many of us, it really doesn\u2019t take long for our sensitivity to return so that we enjoy peace of mind, and not at all its disturbance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Go at your own pace: a periodic \u201ccleanse,\u201d cold turkey, a gradual reduction to just about zero \u2014 whatever works for you. The benefits are their own reward. Who wants to be conditioned, really \u2014 to anything?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
