In this episode of Nonviolence Radio, we explore how nonviolence is showing up around the world—in the news, in movement strategy, and in community-based peacebuilding. We also take a closer look at the recent Gaza flotilla and its use of the “dilemma action” as a powerful tool of action.

Later in the show, we welcome Nina  , author, peacebuilding trainer, and nonviolence educator. During this rich conversation, they discuss the power of nonviolence, exploring not only its core principles but also strategies for carrying those principles into the lives we lead.

This kind of practical learning, Nina believes, can start early. To this end, she has written a children’s book on the subject of nonviolence and created a game (for both kids and adults) that prompts players to imagine how nonviolence might be used effectively in real-life situations.

Part of what emerges from both the book and the game — and from Nina’s experience in her trainings with people all over the world — is the immense strength found in listening honestly and openly to all parties of a conflict:

“Problem solving really involves listening to each other, and it is both cooperative and assertive… you do say what’s important to you and you also listen to the other and what’s important to them.”

Nina’s work reveals how the clear communication of needs and cooperation together form a kind of magical blend for building a foundation for lasting peace.
