Funding

Waging Nonviolence is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means that we don’t report to any stockholders, owners or corporate conglomerates. The majority of our funding comes from two sources: our readers and our community members, which are listed on our Community page. Less than 5 percent of our budget comes from foundation grants and other revenue, like the occasional payment for republication and advertisements.

To date, Waging Nonviolence has received grants either for general support or coverage of particular broad subject areas, like militarism, but not for specific stories. We vigilantly maintain a policy of editorial independence and a firewall between editorial decisions and all sources of revenue. The stories that we pursue — and their direction, tone, point of view and sources — are entirely at the discretion of the writers and editors, not the funders of the site.

We are also committed to donor transparency, and make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. Currently, Waging Nonviolence is supported by a grant from the Jubitz Family Foundation. In the past, we have received funding from the Arca Foundation, Panta Rhea Foundation, Wege Foundation, A.J. Muste Memorial Institute, International Center on Nonviolent Conflict, Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Media Consortium.
